Projects

The Oberwolfach Foundation supports a series of individual projects. Some relate to mathematics in general, others to mathematicians or to the improvement and extension of the Institute. The projects listed here are ongoing and regular activities. To support the Oberwolfach Foundation in its efforts you are invited to contribute with a donation.

OBERWOLFACH PRIZE AND JOHN TODD AWARD

Two prices are given to outstanding mathematicians. They are provided by the Oberwolfach Foundation. Please see the Awards section for more details.

Oberwolfach Foundation Fellows

This grant of the Oberwolfach Foundation aims to support invited excellent early career researchers, coming from places with insufficient support for early career researchers and with Dr./Ph.D. not longer than 10 years ago, with regard to their travel to the MFO. It allows the MFO to reimburse travel expenses up to an amount of 1000 Euros for one early career researcher on average in every week. From 2024 to 2028 the grant is financed by a generous donation of Ralph Eichler, which he gave to the Oberwolfach Foundation in honor of his father.

THE LIBRARY

Its collection contains around 50,000 volumes of books, 27,000 volumes of printed journals, more than 500 subscriptions to printed journals as well as about 4.500 electronic journal subscriptions. As any library the Oberwolfach Library suffers from increasing expenses. The Oberwolfach Foundation helps to maintain the high quality of the Oberwolfach library as one of the best mathematical libraries in the world.

SUPPORT of Junior MATHEMATICIANS

It is important to invite junior mathematicians from all countries to participate at the workshops and seminars of the Institute. The Oberwolfach Foundation supports the Institute in its programs for junior mathematicians. It looks in particular for sponsors for participants of the Oberwolfach Seminars.

Raising Awareness of Mathematics

For the German Year of Mathematics 2008 the Institute developed an interactive travelling exhibition, called IMAGINARY. Since then it has been shown in more than 60 cities in 15 countries and attracted about 500.000 visitors. Its goal is to raise interest in maths and to show its beauty. IMAGINARY developed into an open source platform for interactive mathematics, where schools, universities, museums or private people jointly use and work on exhibits to raise awareness of mathematics. Today IMAGINARY is an service provider in the field of mathematics communication.

MATHEMATICS AND SCHOOL

On a small scale the Institute invites special gifted pupils from neighbouring schools to spend an afternoon at the Institute. At these workshops the participants are motivated to jointly explore mathematical concepts and theorems. These workshops are very popular among the students and the Oberwolfach Foundation helps to further extend this program.
